Habitat
and Description
Cerely
is an annual herb having an aromatic and pungent flavour.
It is used as condiment inmost Indian households.
It has bulbous roots and green leaves.
The fruits and seeds are brown in colour.
It is native to Europe and Asia.
Its essential oil contains selinene, deltalimonene, phthalides,
sedanenolide as well as oe\leic, linoleic, myristic, and stearic acid.

Therapeutic
uses
Celery
seeds help in decreasing pain of Arthritis and rheumatism.
The plant contains more than twenty-five different
anti-inflammatory compounds. It
is highly useful in case of patients suffering from gout, as it
has been believed that the seeds have the ability to lower uric
acid levels. It promotes flow
of blood to muscles and joints, thereby increasing the functional capacity
of bones and muscles. It
contains other minerals the lack of which predisposes a person to
Arthritis.
The
juice of celery is beneficial in nervous disorders and sleeplessness.
Due to its high mineral content, it can be used to
treat blood disorders such as anaemia, leukaemia and purpura.
The seeds are used to relieve indigestion and flatulence. Its diuretic property helps in the removal of kidney and gall
bladder stones. It is also useful in the treatment of bronchitis, asthma
and tuberculosis.
Mode
of Administration and Dosage
Its
seeds are used as infusion for treating Arthritis and gout.
One teaspoonful of celery seeds is kept in one cup of boiling water
for fifteen minutes. The
liquid is then strained. Drink
two cups daily. Its oil can
be mixed with other vegetable oils and massaged into joints to reduce
pain. Fresh juice of both
stalk and leaves of celery may be taken in a dose of 250 ml twice a day.
Precaution
It
is free from any side effects if taken in recommended doses.
However, some people may be allergic to celery seeds.
In such cases, it can cause photo-dermatitis.
