Malas

Malas

The malas are byproducts of various dhatus present in the body.  The  chief malas are three in number

  1. Mutra :  Urine

  2. Shakrit : Faeces

  3. Sweda :  Perpiration

Other malas are : pitta ; purisha sneha or faecal fat; prajanam malas or secretion of the genitalia; and kha malas or secretions of various orifices of the body such as the ear, nose, mouth, and so on.

In addition to the Doshas and Dhatus, there are elements known as Agnis.  The principal action of Agni is to help digestion, absorption and assimilation with the aid of vayu.  There are thirteen `types of Agnis : seven dhatu agnis pertaining to the seven dhatus of the body and five vutagni – the digestive fire in the stomach.  The last named ( jatharagni), contained in the pachaka pitta,  is the root of the agnis in the body.  Its derangement or loss leads to disease.

In order to derive any benefit from Ayurvedic medicines, it is of utmost importance that we evaluate our ‘Prakriti’ on the basis of three Doshas.  Prakriti means individual human constitution.  Prakriti is decided in the womb of a mother.
