Important Characteristics of Doshas’ Prakritis

 

Vata Prakriti

 

Those with vata constitution are generally tall, thin, having rough black skin and dry, black, scaly hair.  They are underweight.  The eyes  are round with a sunken dead look.  The tongue is dry, cracked with blackish gums.  The chest is small in size.  They are weak in physical activities and their concentration is very poor.  They get angry quickly and are of greedy, jealous nature.

 

Pitta Prakriti

 

These people  are medium – built having pale yellow or reddish white skin and soft thin grayish hair.  They perspire a lot, giving off a foul smell.  The eyes are small with a sharp look. The tongue is red and thin and gums are spongy.  They are fast in physical activities and have a sharp memory. They get angry quickly and are of greedy, jealous nature.

 

Kapha Prakriti

 

People of this constitution are well built with fair complexion and an impressive body.  They are generally overweight, with soft and oily skin.  The eyes are big with a lustrous soft look.  They have thick, black, shining hair and their lips are soft and properly shaped.  The tongue is pinkish white and the gums are strong and pink.  They are slow and steady in physical activities and have a steady concentration with in-depth knowledge and good memory.  They do not get angry quickly but if they do so, it is long lasting.  They are not greedy by nature.

 

Gunas

 

As per ayurveda , twenty physical properties known as gunas are found in living beings.  Ayurveda describes all food material or medicinal herbs or minerals in terms of these gunas.  These gunas are as follows ( where ‘I’ indicates increases and ‘D’ donates decreases):

 

1.        Heavy ( Guru) : I – Kapha ; D – Vata, Pitta ; Effects dullness and lethargy.

2.        Light (Laghu) : I – Vata ,Pitta; D-Kapha ; Effects: alertness, improves digestion.

3.        Slow ( Manda) : I – Kapha; D – Vata, Pitta: Effects: dullness and sluggishness.

4.        Shart ( Teckshna) : I- Vata, Pitta; D-Kapha ; Effects : Sharpness, ulcers.

5.        Cold ( Sheeta) : I-Vata, Kapha ; D-Pitta; Effects : cold, numbness, unconsciousness.

6.        Hot (Ushna) : I-Pitta; D-Vata, Kapha;  Effects : anger, heat inflammation, improves digestion.

7.        Oily ( Snigdha) : I-Pitta, Kapha; D-Vata; Effects : lubrication, moisture, compassion.

8.        Dry ( Rooksha ) : I- Vata, Pitta; D-Kapha ; Effects : constipation, nervousness.

9.        Slimy ( Shlaksha) : I-Pitta, Kapha; D-Vata; Effects : smoothness, care, love.

10.     Rough (Khara) : I- Vata, Pitta; D-Kapha ; Effects : rigidity, cracking skin, carelessness.

11.     Dense  ( Sandra) : I – Kapha; D – Vata, Pitta: Effects: density, strength, solidity.

12.     Liquid ( Drava ): I-Pitta, Kapha; D-Vata; Effects : liquefies , cohesiveness.

13.     Soft ( Mridu) : I-Pitta, Kapha; D-Vata; Effects : softness, love, relaxation.

14.     Hard ( Kathina) : I-Vata, Kapha ; D-Pitta; Effects : hardness, strength, selfishness.

15.     Static (Sthira) : I – Kapha; D – Vata, Pitta: Effects: stability , constipation.

16.     Mobile (Chala) : I-Vata, Pitta; D-Kapha ; Effects: restlessness, lack of faith.

17.     Subtle (Sookshma) :  I-Vata, Pitta;  D- Kapha; Effects: emotions, pierces, capillaries.

18.     Gross ( Sthoola) :I-Kapha; D-Vata, Pitta; Effects : obstructions, obesity.

19.     Cloudy ( Avila) : I- Kapha ; D-Vata, Pitta; Effects : Uncleanliness, heals fractures.

20.     Clear ( Vishada) : I-Vata, Pitta; D-Kapha; Effects : isolation, diversion.
