Guidelines for Dietary Intake in Rheumatic Problems as per Ayurveda  

  1. Patients suffering from Arthritis should avoid use of yoghurt or curds
  1. Amongst sour things only gooseberry ( amalaki or Emblica officinalis) and pomegranate may be taken.
  1. Use of mild spices such as ginger, black pepper, cumin seeds, cloves and cinnamon are very useful.
  1. All pulses should be avoided.  Grams, rajamasa and masa ( phaseolus mungo) are very harmful for patients suffering from  Arthritis.  To supplement the protein content of the food, Phaseolus radiatus can be taken.
  1. Patients should strictly avoid fried food.
  1. Vegetables such as gourd, bitter gourd, drumstick, green papaya, plantain, brinjal, spinach, capsicum, patola, kunduru, zucchini and broccoli are very useful for the patient.
  1. The patient should avoid lady’s finger ( okra) jackfruit, pumpkin and colocasia.
  1. Rice as a staple food is not very good for Arthritis patients.  They should depend mostly upon wheat, maize, buckwheat and barley.
  1. Patients should avoid eating meat and fish as much as possible.  They should particularly avoid eggs and sea-fish.
